Farm life??

Hey there,

I have been thinking for along time about saving and then buying a run down place in the country with a small bit of land. Big enough to grow some crops and have cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens etc, in a hope to grow my own food and become semi sufficient.

However, im still young, i guess, 21, and dont really know where to start. I dont have much of an idea about how much this will cost. Also is it nessisary for certain qualifications to raise animals and grow produce??What about machinery? im on the edge and dont know alot about this problem. I mean id love to hear from farmers and the like. Im just very curious and wondered if someone could point me in the right direction to find more information.

Many thanks,
sean

Why are pigs singled out for being unclean?

I’m a farmer, I know the dirty habits of animals. Chickens are far, far worse than pigs. Why aren’t chickens unclean?

HELP on Animal Farm essay?

hello, for my english class i have to write an essay and the prompt is to pick a theme an explain how the theme is displayed throughtout the story. my theme is FOLLOWING A LEADER BLINDLY WILL RESULT IN BEING MANIPULATED. this is what i have so far and it doesn’t sound right so can someone help me fix it?

In the novel Animal Farm, George Orwell presents the theme of that when one chooses to follow a leader blindly, it will result in being manipulated. The gruesome tale of Animal Farm consists of animals loathing their life at Manor Farm. The animals decide they had enough of the farmer’s cruel ways and rebel against Mr. Jones; they win and decide to rename the farm into Animal Farm. It starts out well, but soon it takes a turn for the unthinkable. The ideals of the revolution on which the animals had placed so much of their hope can’t be sustained because of Napoleon, the pig. The wreaking havoc He takes over with vengeance and misery comes over the farm. Ultimately, the animals, the leader, and the
To begin with, the animals on Animal Farm have a huge part in this ordeal. The animals are simple minded, they follow the diabolical Napoleon without a thought they place all their trust in him.

thanx for your time :)

Question for organic meat eaters…..?

I recently read that organic farmers may not give medicine to animals who are suffering because the farmer can get a higher price for their meat and milk if the animals retain organic status. Studies have found that up to one-third of pigs on some organic farms are suffering from untreated infections, and reports also state that organic pigs often suffer from internal and external parasites, which could be passed on to the people who eat them. Organic chickens on some farms suffer from higher mortality rates than drugged chickens because extremely crowded and filthy housing conditions can lead to parasites and cannibalism. When the udders of cows on organic dairy farms become infected from frequent milkings, many farmers don’t give the cows medicine because then their milk would lose the organic label, which allows the product to be sold at a higher price…
So my question is, do you still feel good about eating organic or has this changed your mind?
For anyone who thinks im being one sided or biased I can assure you I am not. I am not a vegetarian but have been considering it for health reasons & in doing some research on the subject this is just something I came across. I was surprised by this information & thought I would share it & get oppinions. I am also sorry if this should of been in another category, I have not posted a Q on here before.

What….No Pigs? A Problem supposedly posed by Leonhard Euler?

For a 100 crowns, a certian farmer bought some horse, goats, and sheep.
For a horse he paid 3 1/2 crowns.
For a goat 1 1/3 crowns.
For a sheep 1/2 a crown.
Assuming he bought at least 7 of each and that he bought 100 animals in all, how many horses, goats and sheep did he buy?

Thanks.

Good? A Rabbi, A Hindu and a Lawyer………?

A Rabbi, a Hindu and a lawyer were driving late at night in the country when their car expired. They set out to find help, and came to a farmhouse. When they knocked at the door, the farmer explained that he had only two beds, and one of the three had to sleep in the barn with the animals. The three quickly agreed. The Rabbi said he would sleep in the barn and let the other two have the beds. Ten minutes after the Rabbi left, there was a knock on the bedroom door. The Rabbi entered exclaiming "I can’t sleep in the barn; there is a pig in there. It’s against my religion to sleep in the same room with a pig!" The Hindu said HE would sleep in the barn, as he had no religious problem with pigs. However, about five minutes later, the Hindu burst through the bedroom door saying "There’s a COW in the barn! I can’t sleep in the same room as a cow! It’s against my religion!"
The lawyer, anxious to get to sleep, said he’d go to the barn, as he had no problem sleeping with animals. In two minutes, the bedroom door burst open and the pig and the cow entered…
If you think this insults Hindi’s or Jewish people, please tell me how because I don’t see it.

feel free to browse my other questions, I post jokes all the time.
for those of you who have trouble getting the joke, I only target two groups of people, lawyers and engineers.
in this case, a lawyer is so repulsive that not even a pig or a cow will sleep in the same bard with one (sheesh).

doesnt anyone feel bad for all the cows ,chickens, pigs in the farm???

so i was watching this video a girl posted on the bulletin for myspace and it was about how animals in the farm cows pigs ,chickens oh yea chickens especially were abused the farmer would like hit chickens with a metal bar and then some people would stomp on them :( this is terrible and for thecows omg i feel terrible for them they would get shocked with a barb and then the farmer would slit his throat alive and what really bothers me here is that these animals never get any fresh air for not 1 part of their lives , they are always stuck in this weird building in metal cages so i want to know if anyone else feels this way or has had no idea this was going on because i know i didnt know any of this was going on…. but i did know they eventually kill these animals for food ..i just didnt know they abused them this badly

You will love this one …?

A farmer went to the market to buy some new animals. He looked all day but couldn’t find anything he didn’t already have.
Finally at the end of the day he spied a Zebra.
Wow, he thought I must have that animal on my farm so off he went home with it. The Zebra didn’t really know what was expected of her at the farm and tried asking the other animals.
First she saw a pig and went over to chat "hey piggy, what do you do here?"
"Wellll" said the pig "I just kinda wait around and eat and roll in the mud".
Hmmmm, thought the Zebra, that doesn’t sound very exciting. Next she noticed a cow in the field. "what do you do here moo cow?" The cow looked the zebra up and down and said "I just eat grass and chew my cud and look at the sky all day". Hmmmmm, that doesn’t sound like much fun either thought the Zebra. Suddenly, wow!
The Zebra saw a beautiful stallion and raced over to speak to him.
"Hiya horsey! What do you do here?" gasped the Zebra. "Well, came the answer, "take your pajamas off and I’ll show you!

OMG am i dreaming?

okay, so there was a cheeseburger and it was running away from the farmer, who was wearing a pink Betsey Johnson dress. He got it at the boutique, but since they don’t sell that dress in the boutiques, he was lying. well his chicken was wearing an Abercrombie shirt, so the pig runs over and splashes mud on it. i don’t understand how these animals are acting very cruel yet smart. can someone explain everything that happended?
