How do you take care of a Guinea Pig, and what do you expect?

I have decided to get a Guinea Pig after thinking so hard about it. I’m getting one tomorrow at a local pet store, and I just stopped to think about what I should expect when I get a Guinea Pig, and what kind to get, and what I need to take care of one. And what kind of cage should I get, and how much will it cost?
Can someone answer the questions I asked above?

Small guinea pig cage?

My guinea pig’s cage is simply too small. He doesn’t seem to mind much but I just feel so bad for him because I know he’d be happier if he had room to run around. The problem is, I don’t have money to buy him a bigger cage. The pet store cages cost around 70-100 dollars and I can’t afford a C&C cage right now either because my only choice is to buy one online and it’s 60 dollars there too. I’m trying to save money so I can get it soon but for now i was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to expand his cage temporarily?

Can you help us on Nameing a full line pet store?

Hi~
My husband and I are working on opening up a full line pet store in Northern California in the next 8-10 months. We will have fish ( salt and fresh) , reptiles, small animals ( hamsters, rats, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits & Chichillas) & small birds. In the state of CA it is a pain in the neck to carry puppies and kittens so we will be working with shelters. But, we will carry all the suppilies and foods for all animals.

We are thinking of 3 names, tell us what you like best:
1. American Pets
2. Pet Paridise
3. Little Pets

Or can you think of a catchy name for a pet store?

Any ideas on what you like in your own little pet store would be great too.

Thanks,
Jennifer

could my guinea pig be pregnant?

Hi, I have just recently bought two guinea pigs, when we first got them from the pet store we were told that they were both girls, but now we are starting to doubt that one of them is a girl. When we first put the two guinea pigs together the first one was purring and trying to bully the other guinea pig, I looked online to try to find out how to tell if a guinea pig is a boy or girl, one is definitely a girl because she has a Y shaped private and the other one has a little bump but when you try to squeeze it the penis does not come out. My guinea pig has suddenly started getting very fat and she was a very gentle, cuddly guinea pig and now she just started biting and will not let anyone touch her, im not sure if she is a boy or girl but is there any way this could be the sign of her being pregnant? both my guinea pigs are the same age and this one has grown so much more than my other one. I have no idea what is going on with them, someone help?

Pot Bellied pigs, are they allowed as pets in Knoxville, Tennessee?

uh…yea, that was pretty much the extent of my question..

I have done my research, i fully understand what I am getting myself into, and have talked to some people who have owned or do own a Pot Belly….but I just can’t find information on animal regulations in Knoxville that I don’t have to download(dial-up slows and freezes) :(

My mother used to work at a pet store about 10 miles from our home, and she says they sold them while she was there…so i don’t see why they would sell pet piglets here if the law prohibited owning them…

but, nevertheless…I would like to be 100% sure first before I jumped on buying one. The last thing I want to do is have to move to keep my pig, or have to give him/her up after giving it a home and spending all that time working with it to train him/her…see what I’m saying?

anyways, thank you so much for any help I obtain from this
:)

How does one properly pick up a gerbil? And other random gerbil questions… 5 points for the best answer?

Okay.. so I’ve had my little guy for… well.. I can’t exactly remember… Definitely over a year. Not more than two years I think.

When I got him, he was already old. I felt so bad when I looked at him all sad looking in the corner. At the pet store he was all alone because he was older than all the other ones. And no one wanted him cuz you know how everyone just goes crazy over the babies! hahaha. I don’t know how old a gerbil has to be in order to be considered an adult. When the pet store lady took him out of him cage, she picked him up by his tail only after chasing him around and put him in a cardboard box. I took him home. (:

Since I saw the lady at the pet store pick up my gerbil this way, I always assumed it’s the right way. I was mortified, absolutely mortified to discover just recently that this is not the proper way! How does one properly pick up a gerbil?

Because I got my gerbil when he was an adult.. he doesn’t really enjoy human contact. He will occassionally let me pet his head for a few seconds then the little ball of energy just runs away. Is it neccessary for gerbils to have human contact like guinea pigs and rabbits? Will putting him in his little play-rolling-ball type thing outside his cage help him become more social?

My mom used to breed gerbils when she was in her 20s, and our family is full of pet-lovers so he’s properly cared for. He has about.. hmm.. I want to say a 15 gallon.. possibly even 20 gallon tank to run around in. I got the cage from a woman who had previously had some hamsters. The wheel is attached and hangs from the cover if that makes sense.. so he can go under the wheel as well. He has a small food dish, and a small wooden house about 4in. by 4in. Does he have enough room to run around? I put lots of bedding for him to burrow in, he always throws it to one side of the cage and makes little tunnels. hahaha.

Thank you so much for taking your time to read and answer my question!!!

My rat had babies- now what?

I purchased a rat from a pet store about 2 weeks ago for my daughter who is 4. The lady at the pet store said rats are a good choice for children as they rarely bite and are big enough to not get as hurt as easily as a hamster or as shy as a guienie pig.

Anyhow I noticed she kept pulling clothes from my daughters floor into her cage, because at night we would put her on the floor of my daughters closet with the doors closed so the cat wouldnt bother her. Every morning she had pulled new piece of clothing through the bars and one morning she had pulled a pair of sweat shorts through and ate hooles through them and made it into a nest so I allowed her to keep them, then I noticed she was getting fatter.

i told my mother I thought she was pregnaant and she said pet stores dont sell prego rats, and then she got thin again so I blew it off, I fed her daily and kept her water fresh, but I only clean her cage every 1 to 2 weeks, when I went to clean her cage she got very upset and I lifted up the shorts and there was a mass load of babies in the nest- I dont know how long they had been there, but we looked up pics online and thheyy looked to be 2 weeks- which means they are about 2 1/2 now.

We tried sexing them and we got 6 boys and 6 girls, I also bought an aquarium for them to go in so they didnt crawl through the holes of the other cage.

My question is what do I do now, do I feed them anything, when do I seperate the sexes? What do I do with them when Its time to let them go- i cant keep 12 rats. I would like to keep one though, Im assuming I should keep a girl eh? When do they open their eyes? If I do sell them how much does a hand raised rat go for? Can I sell them back to the pet shop? Thanks guys, any info I didnt think to ask would be good to know as well.

Question about guinea pigs? Thanks!!! :)?

Ok, so, I have a male guinea pig who I’ve had for about 9 months. I want another guinea pig, because I looove them, and when I’m not around to play with my current one, I want something to keep him occupied. :) I went to the pet store today, and a lady who works there said that considering I already have a guinea pig, if I put another one with it, it’s gonna get territorial and they’ll fight. They’re both males also. She said that if they were raised together, then they’d be fine though. But considering they weren’t, she said no, you can’t put them together. But about a month ago when I went to the same pet store, and another lady who works there said the opposite. She said they might take some time to get used to each other considering they are both males, but all in all guinea pigs are very social animals. I read online and it said they’ll "play fight" but some people said they’ll actually fight. I’m hearing mixed things. So my question is, if I already HAVE a guinea pig, and was to buy a new cage and a new guinea pig, stick them both together. Would they fight, and would my current guinea pig become territorial? He’s not an aggressive guinea pig if that matters. Thanks!!! :)
No females haha… As cute as it’d be, I wouldn’t want anymore little guinea pigs.
