Thinking about getting a guinea pig?
I already own a hamster (Chandler) and I was thinking about also getting a guinea pig in a couple months. I have been researching cages and proper care and the like, but its always helpful to get more advice.
Firstly, other than buying the cages online, where can I find a good guinea pig home? Also, is Petco a good place to get a guinea pig or should I find an actual breeder (pretty scarce on Long Island)?
And most importantly, how much would the initial cost of the items plus the guinea pig be? And monthly?
And also – will the GP’s presence upset my hamster?

guinea pigs get along pretty well with hampsters…i had both and they loved to play together.
petsmart and wallmart and places like that carry piles of acceptable cages…i suggest one that is big enough to keep one of those igloo domes (they LOVE those!) and one with wire sides so that you can hang the water bottle on it, that or one of the cages that have stuff like that built in.
it only matters where you get it if you want to put it in a show or something like that…but you can get it at petco…they keep pretty good care of their animals, but you should still take it to the vet anyways cuz guinea pigs can spread diseases between themselves VERY fast, like ear mites or worms or somesort.
the cost can vary between $100 and $300 it depends how extravagant you want to get (cage with built in water bottle etc…) and monthly food costs about 20$ with the baged food then the stuff you feed it from your fridge
they love carrots, grapes, spinach, oranges…anything like that!
and as long as you dont keep them in the same cage and just let them play a little they will be fiiiine

* I have two guinea pigs and they are a joy to have , you could maybe check out the animal shelter to adopt a guinea pig they are all friendly and it doesnt matter if you have it from birth or older as they are friendly and like to socialize i also have a hamster and NO the hamster barely knows what is happening so it wont affect it b/coz they sleep basically the whole day , My guinea pigs cost mi like 5 euros every 2-3 weeks ( thats like maybe 3 dollars ) It doesnt matter if you find an actuall breader they are all a good joy to have weather from a breader or pet shop ( i got mine from a pet shop )
As for a cage try and get a spaceious cage they like to run around a lot and get sad if they dont have space also They LOVE lettes and carrots , NOT tomatoes as they have a type of acid which can give them a sore tummy
Hope that helped good luck =] *
BUT do Not put the Guinea WiTH the hamster as hamsters are teritorial and will attack a guinea !!! *

About the cages make a c&c cage from this website http://www.guineapigcages.com/ Its got great info and ideas for saving money.if you adopt form cavy spirit each pig is $25 and your saving there live they have several centers all around the united states. the first cost for the cage toys food hay pig ect. is around $100 to $300 depending how many pigs how big of a cage the type of food and hay. (the food and hay should be cheeped out on they need the best) lots of people think piggies are cheap but the monthly bill is around $10 to $30. they need veggies, fruit, hay, and pellets every day and hay all day long. Please don’t buy a pig for a child as they will lose interest and might end up killing them. go to the website they are very informational and helpful.

there very cute but they don’t live long.
